Misbehaviours of fortune

She walks awkwardly,
carrying across her impoverished back
the weight of a child
and the misbehaviours of fortune.

She seeks to cross this line
etched across the air, sky, sea and mind
to wash her palms clean
of her fateless fate
and to seek something
better.

Stand, if you will,
upon the threshold
she so wishes to leap over.
But, please,
put away the hollow threat
of that double barrel
aimed at this enemy.

She is just a woman
weighed down by fortune.
