Stitch

Gulf
cooled by conditioned air,
chills gradually, silently between us.

We think of
old friendships, commonalities
that are not so common any more;

sepia seeped memories
that are too far gone
too stale
for regurgitation;

old jokes
the rings of laughter around which
have rippled away to
the edges;

other musty things
that have been packed away
or opened too often
and now
cannot be retrieved.

Perhaps, it is our
former closeness
that make the edges
of this gulf
steep.

Then,
silence abridged-
bridged over-
by the single stitch
of new words.
